The Mustang Horse
The mustang is a very well known horse that is seen by many as a symbol of the romantic and adventurous excitement of the American wild west.
But Mustangs are usually referred to as 'wild' horses, the more accurate phrase is 'feral' horses as all free-roaming horses in The usa are bred from horses that were originally domestic animals brought to The u.s. by the colonists.
In most cases, these imported horses were of Spanish or Arab breeding stock, but also included all combinations of colours and many people breeds.
It is believed that some of these independent and clever horses escaped or were traded by aboriginal americans, and quickly spread all through the whole country.
The Appaloosa horse
Appaloosas characteristically have a mottled (or 'spotty') coat, pale sclera (the bit of the eye around the cornea) and vertically striped hooves.
The breed history of this distinctive horse is not completely known. There is proof that spotted horses were being bred in a good many countries in Asia and europe, and we know of cave drawings which have been dated to 18000BC clearly showing spotty horses that could well be be the origins of the horse we know today. It is very likely that the spotted coat was first a form of camouflage, serving a similar purpose to the striped pattern on a zebra.
The modern Appaloosa is descended from horses shipped over to Mexico and the u.s. by colonists. These were acquired by the Nez perce tribe, who expertly turned them into the incredible horses that we know nowadays.
This wonderful horse was first called the "Palouse horse", but slowly the name has changed into the modern adaptation, "Appaloosa".
