The Appaloosa
Appaloosas classically display a leopard spotted coat, colorless sclera (the part of the eye close to the cornea) and striped hooves.
The breed history of this unusual horse is only partly known. There is some evidence that mottled horses were established in a good many nation-states in 'the old world', and there are cave pictures which have been dated back to 18000BC illustrating spotted horses that may be the origins of the modern appaloosa. It is quite likely that the mottled coat was first a type of camouflage, serving a similar purpose to the stripes on a zebra.
The modern-day Appaloosa is descended from horses shipped to Mexico and the u.s. by conquistadors. These got into the hands of the Indigenous people known as the 'nez perce', who cleverly engineered them into the excellent horses that we love today.
The horse was originally referred to as the "Palouse horse", although over time its name transformed into the modern interpretation, "Appaloosa".
The Mustang Horse
The mustang is a very well known horse which is seen by many americans as a living symbol of the influential and cowboy enthusiasm of the Wild west.
Although Mustangs are usually known as 'wild' horses, the more accurate term is 'feral' horses as all so-called 'wild' horses inside Mexico and the u.s. are descended from horses that were originally domesticated horses brought to The usa by the early settlers.
Almost all of these foreign horses were of Andalusian or Arab breeding stock, but included all combinations of colours and many horse lovers breeds and types.
A good number of these sturdy horses got loose or were stolen by local aboriginals, and swiftly spread all through the whole of the u.s..
