The Appaloosa horse
Appaloosas commonly show a leopard spotted coat, pale sclera (the section of the eye close to the cornea) and vertically striped hooves.
The history of this distinctive horse is not totally recognized. There is evidence that spotted horses were established in very many geographical regions in 'the old world', and historians have found cave drawings which have been dated to 18000BC clearly showing mottled horses that may be the origins of the appaloosa we know today. It is quite possible that the spotted pattern was by origin a type of camouflage, serving a similar purpose to the striped pattern on a zebra.
The modern Appaloosa is descended from horses carried to The usa by early colonists. These got into the hands of the Indigenous people known as the 'nez perce', who expertly bred them into the marvelous horses that we know and love nowadays.
Appaloosas were in the first instance called the "Palouse horse", even though bit by bit the name was changed into the present-day variant, "Appaloosa".
The mustang
The mustang is a renowned horse that is recognized by many americans as a live symbol of the romantic and adventurous energy of the Wild west.
Although Mustangs are most often called 'wild' horses, the more appropriate word is 'feral' horses as most free-roaming horses living in America are related to horses that were first domestic animals brought to The usa by the settlers.
Most of these imported horses were of European or Arab breeding stock, but also included all conceivable colours and many types and breeds.
A few of these great horses got loose or were acquired by indigenous americans, and quickly spread throughout the whole of america
