The Appaloosa horse
Appaloosas commonly show a leopard spotted skin, colorless sclera (the part of the eye next to the cornea) and striped hooves.
The history of this popular horse is not completely known. There is some proof that mottled horses were being bred in a good many nations in Europe, and archeologists have found cave paintings which are as old as to 18000BC illustrating spotty horses that might be forefathers of the appaloosa we know today. It is quite possible that the spotted skin was first a form of camouflage, much as the striped pattern on a zebra.
The modern Appaloosa is descended from horses brought to America by spanish conquistadors. These were passed to the Nez perce people, who skillfully turned them into the marvelous horses that we know and love nowadays.
This wonderful horse was originally known as the "Palouse horse", even though gradually its name has changed into the contemporary interpretation, "Appaloosa".
The mustang
The mustang is a very renowned horse that is held by many as a living symbol of the historic and adventurous energy of the Old wild west.
Although Mustangs are commonly called 'wild' horses, the more appropriate name is 'feral' horses as almost all so-called 'wild' horses in Mexico and the u.s. are related to horses that were first domestic animals shipped to Mexico and the u.s. by the conquistadors.
Almost all of these early horses were of Spanish or Arab stock, although they also included a wide range of colours and many people types and breeds.
Clearly, some of these independent horses went wild or were bought by the indigenous peoples, and swiftly spread all through the whole country
