The Appaloosa
Appaloosas frequently display a mottled (or 'spotty') coat, white sclera (the bit of the eye next to the cornea) and vertically striped hooves.
The story of this attractive horse is not fully understood. There is some proof that spotted horses were found in a good many nation-states in Europe, and archeologists have found cave paintings which have been dated to 18000BC showing spotted horses that could well be be the origins of the modern appaloosa. It is quite likely that the mottled pattern was originally a form of camouflage, serving a similar purpose to the stripes on a zebra.
The modern-day Appaloosa is descended from horses shipped over to America by colonists. These were somehow acquired by the Nez perce people, who expertly engineered them into the first-rate horses that we love these days.
Appaloosas were by origin called the "Palouse horse", even though bit by bit the name has changed into the modern version, "Appaloosa".
