The Mustang Horse
The mustang horse is an extremely popular horse and due to its unique place in history, is held by many people as a symbolic representation of the romantic and pioneer enthusiasm of the American wild west.
But Mustangs are usually referred to as 'wild' horses, the more correct name is 'feral' horses as almost all free-roaming horses established in The usa are descended from horses that were originally domestic horses shipped to Mexico and the u.s. by the spanish conquistadors.
Mostly, these early horses were of Andalusian or Arabian origins, but also included all conceivable colours and many americans types and breeds.
Many of these brave horses got loose or were bought by indigenous americans, and swiftly spread through the whole country.
The Appaloosa
Appaloosas ordinarily show a leopard spotted coat, pale sclera (the section of the eye next to the cornea) and striped hooves.
The breed background of this popular horse is not totally known. There is plenty of proof that mottled horses were living in quite a few countries in 'the old world', and we know of cave drawings which are as old as to 18000BC showing mottled horses that may be related to the appaloosa we know today. It seems likely that the spotted skin was originally a type of camouflage, much as the stripes on a zebra.
The modern Appaloosa is descended from horses shipped to The u.s. by early settlers. These were passed to the Nez perce people, who proficiently engineered them into the marvelous horses that we admire these days.
The appaloosa was originally called the "Palouse horse", but bit by bit its name changed into the contemporary variant, "Appaloosa".
