The mustang horse
The mustang horse is a wellknown horse that is recognized by many horse lovers as a symbol of the historic and adventurous energy of the American wild west.
Although Mustangs are ordinarily referred to as 'wild' horses, the more correct term is 'feral' horses as all free-roaming horses living in Mexico and the u.s. are descended from horses that were initially domestic horses shipped to The usa by the spanish conquistadors.
Almost all of these imported horses were of Spanish or Arab stock, but also included all possible colours and many breeds and types.
Clearly, some of these independent horses were set free or were bought by the indigenous peoples, and soon spread right through the whole country
The Appaloosa horse
Appaloosas commonly have a leopard spotted coat, pale sclera (the bit of the eye next to the cornea) and striped hooves.
The story of this unusual horse is only partly recognized. There is plenty of evidence that spotted horses were established in a good number of countries in 'the old world', and there are cave drawings which have been dated back to 18000BC showing spotted horses that might be related to the modern appaloosa. It is quite likely that the spotted pattern was first a type of camouflage, much as the striped pattern on a zebra.
The modern Appaloosa descends from horses shipped to Mexico and the u.s. by spanish conquistadors. These got into the hands of the Nez perce indian tribe, who proficiently engineered them into the excellent horses that we know these days.
The horse was first called the "Palouse horse", although over the years the name changed into the contemporary version, "Appaloosa".
