The Appaloosa horse
Appaloosas generally display a mottled coat, white sclera (the part of the eye next to the cornea) and vertically striped hooves.
The history of this popular horse is only partly recognized. There is some proof that mottled horses were present in a good number of countries in Asia and europe, and there are cave pictures which have been dated back to 18000BC illustrating spotty horses that could well be be forefathers of the modern appaloosa. It is possible that the spotted skin was in the first instance a type of camouflage, much as the zebra's stripes.
The modern Appaloosa is descended from horses shipped to America by colonists. These were somehow acquired by the Nez perce people, who adeptly turned them into the wonderful horses that we love these days.
Appaloosas were first called the "Palouse horse", even though over the years the name was changed into the modern-day form, "Appaloosa".
