The Appaloosa horse
Appaloosas characteristically display a leopard spotted coat, colorless sclera (the part of the eye around the cornea) and vertically striped hooves.
The breed background of this well-loved horse is not totally known. There is plenty of proof that mottled horses were being bred in a number of nation-states in Asia, and archeologists have found cave pictures dating back to 18000BC showing spotty horses that might be forefathers of the modern appaloosa. It is possible that the spotted pattern was first a type of camouflage, similar to the stripes on a zebra.
The modern Appaloosa descends from horses brought to America by settlers. These were acquired by the Nez perce people, who expertly bred them into the first-rate horses that we so admire these days.
Appaloosas were originally referred to as the "Palouse horse", but gradually its name transformed into the present-day variant, "Appaloosa".
