The Appaloosa
Appaloosas characteristically display a mottled coat, pale sclera (the section of the eye around the cornea) and vertically striped hooves.
The breed background of this unusual horse is only partly known. There is some proof that spotted horses were being bred in many nations in Asia, and we know of cave drawings dating back to 18000BC showing spotted horses that could well be be the origins of the modern appaloosa. It is quite likely that the spotted pattern was originally a type of camouflage, similar to the stripes on a zebra.
The present-day Appaloosa descends from horses brought to America by spanish conquistadors. These got into the hands of the Indigenous people known as the 'nez perce', who masterfully engineered them into the extraordinary horses that we love these days.
Appaloosas were by origin known as the "Palouse horse", even though over the years the name changed into the modern-day adaptation, "Appaloosa".
