The Appaloosa
Appaloosas normally display a leopard spotted skin, colorless sclera (the part of the eye close to the cornea) and striped hooves.
The history of this attractive horse is not fully understood. There is some proof that mottled horses were being bred in quite a few geographical regions in Asia, and archeologists have found cave drawings dating back to 18000BC clearly showing spotted horses that might be the origins of the modern appaloosa. It is quite likely that the mottled skin was initially a form of camouflage, similar to the stripes on a zebra.
The contemporary Appaloosa descends from horses brought to The u.s. by colonists. These were passed on to the Nez perce tribe, who adeptly engineered them into the marvelous horses that we love right now.
The appaloosa was initially known as the "Palouse horse", but bit by bit its name was changed into the contemporary variant, "Appaloosa".
