The mustang
The mustang horse is a well known horse that is recognized by many americans as a live symbol of the romantic and pioneer enthusiasm of the Old wild west.
Although Mustangs are ordinarily known as 'wild' horses, the more correct expression is 'feral' horses as all so-called 'wild' horses established in The usa are descended from horses that were by origin domestic horses shipped to The u.s. by the colonists.
Most of these foreign horses were of Spanish or Arab stock, but also had amongst them all possible colours and many people breeds.
A good number of these independent and brave horses were set free or were traded by local aboriginals, and soon spread right through the whole of america
The Appaloosa horse
Appaloosas characteristically have a leopard spotted skin, white sclera (the part of the eye close to the cornea) and striped hooves.
The story of this well-loved horse is only partly understood. There is proof that spotted horses were being bred in a good number of nations in 'the old world', and there are cave drawings which have been dated back to 18000BC clearly showing spotted horses that may be related to the modern appaloosa. It is very likely that the mottled skin was in the first instance a type of camouflage, similar to the stripes on a zebra.
The modern Appaloosa is descended from horses shipped to Mexico and the u.s. by spanish conquistadors. These were acquired by the Nez perce tribe, who proficiently bred them into the terrific horses that we love today.
This fine horse was in the first instance called the "Palouse horse", even though over the years its name was changed into the modern form, "Appaloosa".
