The Appaloosa horse
Appaloosas typically have a mottled (or 'spotty') coat, pale sclera (the section of the eye next to the cornea) and striped hooves.
The background of this attractive horse is only partly recognized. There is some proof that spotted horses were present in a number of nations in Asia and europe, and archeologists have found cave paintings dating back to 18000BC clearly showing spotted horses that might be related to the modern appaloosa. It is quite likely that the spotted coat was originally a type of camouflage, much as the striped pattern on a zebra.
The modern-day Appaloosa is descended from horses carried to The usa by early settlers. These were passed to the Nez perce indian tribe, who proficiently turned them into the terrific horses that we know and love right now.
The appaloosa was originally referred to as the "Palouse horse", although gradually the name has changed into the contemporary alternative, "Appaloosa".
