The Appaloosa
Appaloosas frequently have a mottled (or 'spotty') skin, pale sclera (the bit of the eye close to the cornea) and vertically striped hooves.
The story of this popular horse is not fully understood. There is evidence that spotted horses were established in a number of nations in Asia and europe, and there are cave drawings dating back to 18000BC illustrating mottled horses that might be the origins of the horse we know today. It is quite possible that the mottled skin was first a type of camouflage, serving a similar purpose to the striped pattern on a zebra.
The modern Appaloosa descends from horses brought to Mexico and the u.s. by early colonists. These were acquired by the Nez perce indian tribe, who expertly turned them into the marvelous horses that we admire right now.
The horse was first called the "Palouse horse", although slowly its name was changed into the contemporary rendering, "Appaloosa".
