The Mustang Horse
The mustang horse is an extremely wellknown horse which is recognized by many americans as a living and breathing symbol of the historic and adventurous energy of the Old wild west.
But Mustangs are often referred to as 'wild' horses, the more accurate expression is 'feral' horses as most free-roaming horses present in The usa are bred from horses that were originally domestic animals brought to The u.s. by the spanish conquistadors.
Most of these early horses were of European or Arab breeding stock, although they also had amongst them all possible colours and many breeds.
It is believed that some of these brave horses went wild or were traded by indigenous peoples, and quickly spread right through the whole of america.
The Appaloosa
Appaloosas normally display a mottled coat, colorless sclera (the section of the eye close to the cornea) and striped hooves.
The story of this unusual horse is only partly known. There is some proof that spotted horses were found in quite a few countries in Europe, and historians have found cave paintings which are as old as to 18000BC clearly showing mottled horses that may be related to the modern appaloosa. It is very likely that the mottled coat was initially a form of camouflage, much as the zebra's stripes.
The contemporary Appaloosa descends from horses carried to The usa by early colonists. These were somehow acquired by the Nez perce indian tribe, who proficiently engineered them into the superb horses that we love at the present time.
Appaloosas were first referred to as the "Palouse horse", although over the years its name transformed into the modern-day adaptation, "Appaloosa".
