The mustang
The mustang is a well-known horse that is recognized by many people as a living and breathing symbol of the influential and adventurous spirit of the American wild west.
Although Mustangs are often known as 'wild' horses, the more correct word is 'feral' horses as all so-called 'wild' horses inside The usa are related to horses that were originally domestic animals brought to The usa by the early colonists.
Almost all of these foreign horses were of Andalusian or Arab breeding stock, but had amongst them all conceivable colors and many people types and breeds.
It is thought that some of these independent horses escaped or were stolen by local aboriginals, and rapidly spread all through the whole of america
The Appaloosa horse
Appaloosas typically have a mottled (or 'spotty') coat, pale sclera (the part of the eye around the cornea) and vertically striped hooves.
The breed history of this well-loved horse is only partly known. There is some proof that spotted horses were living in a good many geographical regions in Asia and europe, and archeologists have found cave paintings which have been dated to 18000BC illustrating spotted horses that could well be be forefathers of the modern appaloosa. It is quite possible that the mottled pattern was originally a type of camouflage, much as the striped pattern on a zebra.
The modern Appaloosa descends from horses shipped to Mexico and the u.s. by settlers. These were acquired by the Nez perce tribe, who adeptly engineered them into the fantastic horses that we love at the present time.
Appaloosas were initially called the "Palouse horse", even though slowly the name transformed into the modern adaptation, "Appaloosa".
